Remarks
From the Bayreuth Festival
A production by Wieland Wagner (premiere)
The “black Venus” of Grace Bumbry created quite a sensation in Bayreuth.
Since I have a tape with the original announcements it’s clear that the recordings captures the premiere of Wieland Wagners’s new Tannhäuser production because the announcer explicitly says so (“Eröffnungsvorstellung”). However, Orfeo who got the recording directly from the Bavarian Rundfunk gives the date august 3. There are two possibilities. The Bavarian Rundfunk taped a second Tannhäusr performance which means Orfeo’s release is indeed a different recording from august 3 or Orfeo simply got the date wrong.
