In 1981 Jean-Pierre Ponnelle staged Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth festival. The production ran for five seasons from 1981 to 1987 (in 1984 und 1985 there were no performances) and all performances were conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The radio broadcasts from 1982 and 1983 have just been added to the list so that recordings from every season are available. The live recording from 1982 features the same cast as the premiere in 1981. In 1983 Spas Wenkoff replaced René Kollo as Tristan and Graham Clark took over Melot. Interestingly, in the commercial DVD release from 1983 it’s again René Kollo who sings Tristan and not Spas Wenkoff. Though Wenkoff is a solid Tristan, a comprehensible decision made by Barenboim.
